General Motors made an announcement today that they are offering a $500 rebate toward a new GM vehicle or a loaner vehicle to GM car owners whose cars were recalled for a faulty and potentially dangerous ignition switch in older cars. The only catch, you have to ask for the benefits. The $500 cash allowance rebate expires April 30th, 2014, so you have to act quickly in order to take advantage of this rebate.

GM admits that 12 people have dies because of the glitch. It has landed GM in hot water with the Department of Justice, as an investigation into the handling of the recall is set to occur. Two congressional committees, one from each party, are also said to be looking into the matter. GM admitted that they knew about the faulty ignition switch for over a decade.

Last month, on Feb. 13, GM announced the recall of more than 780,000 Chevy Cobalts and Pontiac G5s (model years 2005-2007). A couple weeks later it added 842,000 Saturn Ion compacts (2003-2007), and Chevrolet HHR SUVs and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars (2006-2007 to the recall list.
